MRCP2-0631
A 35-year-old woman at 33 weeks gestation presented to an ante-natal clinic. She has a history of diabetic renal disease and has been experiencing increasing ankle swelling, headaches, and blurred vision for the past 24 hours. She also vomited twice this morning after breakfast and is currently feeling nauseated. During her clinic visit, her blood pressure was found to be elevated at 170 mmHg systolic and 100 mmHg diastolic, leading to her admission to the labour ward for pre-eclampsia treatment. She was started on a magnesium sulphate infusion, which initially caused facial flushing, worsening nausea, and blurred vision, but her headaches were improving, and her blood pressure was decreasing. However, a midwife noticed that the patient was slurring her speech and experiencing double vision, which the patient attributed to fatigue. Several hours later, the midwife found the patient barely responsive with a heart rate of 55 beats per minute. What is the most likely cause of her symptoms?
