MRCEM Intermediate Single Best Answer (SBA)
MRCEM Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)

All MRCEM components are blueprinted to the RCEM 2021 Emergency Medicine Curriculum

MRCEM Part 1 Examination

3-hour (180 minutes) paper
180 single best answer questions (SBAQ)

Requirements:

No previous experience in Emergency Medicine is required for the MRCEM Primary exam.

A candidate will be eligible to enter the MRCEM Primary examination provided they hold a medical qualification approved by the General Medical Council (GMC) for the purposes of registration.

MRCPCH Exam

The MRCPCH (membership) exam has three theory exams, which are computer-based and taken in an exam centre. They are Foundation of Practice (FOP), Theory and Science (TAS) and Applied Knowledge in Practice (AKP); they can be taken in any order.

Foundation of Practice (FOP)

FOP assesses a candidate’s knowledge, understanding and clinical decision making abilities. The exam is part of both the MRCPCH and Diploma of Child Health (DCH) exams.

  • Duration: 2.5 hours
  • Previous name: MRCPCH Part 1A

Theory and Science (TAS)

TAS tests basic scientific, physiological and pharmacological principles of clinical practice, and of evidence-based practice. It is part of the MRCPCH exams.

  • Typically 80 questions (SBAs – 70 questions, EMQs – 10 questions)
  • 2.5 hours (150 minutes)

Candidates can apply to take FOP and TAS on the same day; FOP is always in the morning, and TAS in the afternoon. The difficulty levels of the FOP/TAS exam papers are set to guarantee that all candidates have reached the required standard of someone entering specialist training. Requirements:

Theory examinations can be taken in any order and are non-sequential. Candidates must pass the three theory examinations before they can sit the MRCPCH Clinical examination. Candidates do not need pass English language tests. However, it is recommended that your English language proficiency be equivalent to IELTS Level 7.

MRCOG EXAM OVERVIEW

The Part 1 MRCOG assesses the Scientific Platform for Clinical Practice. It examines the 15 core Knowledge Areas in four domains of understanding. This is assessed using single best answer (SBA) questions. Areas include: 1. Understanding Cell Function: physiology, endocrinology and biochemistry, 2. Understanding Human Structure: anatomy, embryology and genetics, 3. Understanding Measurement and Manipulation: biophysics, epidemiology and statistics, data interpretation and pharmacology and 4. Understanding Illness: immunology, microbiology, pathology and clinical management.

MRCOG Part 1 Examination

2 x computer-based test (CBT) examination
2.5 hours (150 minutes) each
100 single best answer questions (SBAs) each.
No minimum score required for each paper and the outcome is determined only by a candidate’s overall (combined) mark.
2 papers over 1 day

Requirements:

Applying for the Part 1 exam is a 2-stage process: eligibility and booking.

You must first have your eligibility application processed and approved, before you can make a booking application online.

If your eligibility has been approved already, you do not need to apply again.

However, it’s essential to use the same RCOG account which has your eligibility approved.

MRCS EXAM OVERVIEW

Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) is an intercollegiate exam for surgical trainees who wish to become a member of one of the four surgical royal colleges in the UK and Ireland. The examination syllabus and the format and content of this examination are common to all four colleges. (i.e. The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, The Royal College of Surgeons of England, The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.) Candidates can enter any part of the examination through any college, but may enter with only one college at each sitting. It has two parts:

Part A – Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)

Part B – Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)

Candidates must pass Part A before applying to sit Part B (OSCE), however candidates who fail the Part B (OSCE) are not required to re-sit Part A.

Note: Candidates are allowed up to six attempts at the MRCS Part A (with effect from April 2013) and up to four attempts at MRCS Part B (OSCE).

MRCS Part A Examination

Paper 1 – Applied Basic Sciences MCQ paper (180 questions, 3 hours)
Paper 2 – Principles of Surgery-in-General MCQ paper (120 questions, 2 hours)
Single best answer format

Requirements: – A candidate must possess a primary medical qualification that is acceptable to the United Kingdom General Medical Council or to the Medical Council in Ireland. Prospective candidates who wish to check the acceptability of their medical degrees should see the World Directory of Medical Schools.

MRCP EXAM OVERVIEW

The MRCP (Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians) Diploma and Specialty Certificate Examinations are designed to test the skills, knowledge and behaviour of doctors in training. The MRCP(UK) Diploma has been approved by the General Medical Council (GMC) as the knowledge-based assessment for core medical training.  It has three parts:

– MRCP(UK) Part 1

– MRCP(UK) Part 2 Written

– MRCP(UK) Part 2 Clinical (PACES)

Successful completion of the entire three-part examination is required before beginning specialist internal medicine training in the UK.

Note: After passing Part 1, you have the option to sit the MRCP(UK) Part 2 Written or Part 2 Clinical (PACES) examinations in either order, or simultaneously in the same assessment period.
