All medical students graduating from UK universities from the 2024–25 academic year onwards must pass the MLA as part of their degree before joining the medical register. International doctors seeking UK practice (previously taking PLAB) now take the MLA from 2024 onwards.

The UKMLA has two components: the AKT (Applied Knowledge Test) - an on-screen multiple-choice exam with 150–200 SBAs set by the GMC - and the CPSA (Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment), an OSCE with real-life scenarios including mock consultations and acute ward settings.
